After over a decade’s long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Judy Staley passed away in Papillion, NE on September 9, 2018 at the age of 66.
Judy Ann Staley was born to William “Bill” and Leola (Wait) Staley on May 18, 1952 in Marceline, MO. She graduated a member of the Park Hill Class of 1970. Upon graduating, her family moved from the Kansas City area to co-own and operate Staley’s Thriftway. Judy worked at her family’s grocery stores in Brookfield and Macon and Whitaker Cable of Brookfield. Judy graduated from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville in May of 1980. Judy worked as a customer service rep at Walsworth Publishing Company. In 1985, Judy and her daughters relocated to the Kansas City area where she worked at Art Litho, Banta and Quebecor Printing companies as a customer service representative. Judy was forced into early retirement at the age of 54 when the symptoms of Alzheimer’s made it impossible to perform her job. During her retirement, Judy enjoyed travel, gardening, shopping, and spending time with family. Judy was a member of the First Christian Church of Brookfield. Judy participated in clinical studies of early onset Alzheimer’s through KU Med.
Judy is lovingly remembered by her two daughters and a son-in-law, Karie (Tooey/Farrenkopf) and Eric Slupianek of Kearney and Elizabeth “Beth” (Hecke) Shelman of Papillion, NE. Judy was “Mimi” to seven grandchildren, Caleb and Grifyn Farrenkopf of Brookfield, Karcyn and Maecyn Farrenkopf of Kearney and Dylan, Johnathan and Harrison Shelman of Papillion. She survived by two brothers and their wives, Jerry and Beverly Staley and of Pleasant Hill and Robert “Rob” W. and Nancy Staley of Fort Worth, TX; an aunt, Doris Staley of Brookfield; an uncle, Wayne Wait and his wife Fran of Macon, and several cousins, nephews and nieces.
Judy is preceded in death by her parents, her aunt Velma (Wait) Jones, her uncle Robert “Bob” L. Staley, her aunt Alberta (Southers) Wait and two cousins Sharon (Staley) Robinson and Clayton Bergmann.
Services will be held at Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church in Kansas City at 6:30 pm with Pastor Jim Gordon officiating. A second service officiated by Pastor Mandy Wiedeman will be held at 11 am at the First Christian Church in Brookfield with internment at Bell Cemetery in Ethel, MO immediately following. The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Judy.
