The Marceline and Brookfield girls' golf teams travelled to Kirksville Country Club on Tuesday morning, and the two squads tied for eighth out of 13 teams by shooting 469. Mexico won the event with a team score of 391 strokes.

Brookfield's Demi Downey shot the best round between the two teams, finishing with a 101-stroke round. Teammate Laken Sattman shot a 103. Brookfield's Mallory McCabe, Carly Clarkson, and Ella Thompson finished with respective scores of 132, 133, and 136.

"For our three, four, and five girls, that was the very first time they had ever played 18 holes," Brookfield coach Angie Downey said. "Demi and Laken definitely didn't play their best rounds, but the season is just getting started."

Marceline's K'Lea Dameron led her team with a 110-stroke morning. Kate Cupp was team runner-up with a 116. Renee Sinclair and Madison Gerdes finished separated by only a stroke at 121 and 122, and Emma Sheerman finished with a 127-stroke round.

Marceline improved its team score by 24 strokes from last year.

"I was really impressed with the girls' performance today," Marceline coach Tim Jordan said. "I think Kirksville is one of the toughest courses we play all year because it's so long. Some girls didn't play as well as they wanted, but I hope we can continue to get better and keep up our work ethic as the season goes on."
