The Marceline girls' basketball team was rocked by perennially powerful Trenton on Tuesday night, 77-40, at home.
The Tigers fall to 2-2 with the home-opening loss. The Tigers' only games thus far this season were in the Glasgow Tournament.
Trenton is coming off of a 26-2 season, and two years ago, was a state final four participant at the Class 3 level.
The visitors kicked the Tigers early on, and held Marceline to just four points in the first quarter while scoring 19. By the halftime break, Trenton held a 42-17 lead, and the entire fourth quarter was played under running-clock circumstances.
The Tigers had their best quarter in the final frame when they scored 16 points, despite the clock never stopping.
"We knew our personnel, but we have to do a better job of playing like a team early on," Marceline coach Jordan Beck said. "We figured out that we have to drive to the hole when we're not getting a bunch of outside shots.
"I told the girls that even though we're playing a good team, we have to give it all of our effort. We had some girls tonight with a deer-in-the-headlights look. No team is unbeatable, and there's no game that we can't compete in."
Maycee Edgar led the Tigers with 13 points, and Baylee Jobson finished with 10. Jaylea Bixenman's seven points was third on the team.
The Bulldogs' head coach Brian Upton believes that his team, which lost just one senior from last year's squad, is poised to kick out another impressive season against north Missouri foes.
"We take a lot of pride in our defense, we just come out and defend," Upton said. "We did a good job tonight of seeing the ball and helping, and it's a different intensity on the defensive end from what we had last year. We've got five kids that might lead some other scorers in scoring, and our girls are just explosive and we have a depth in talent."
Upton's leading scorer, guard Ainsley Tolson, finished with 33 points, including 20 in the first half.
Marceline plays three games next week. It travels to Paris on Tuesday and Monroe City on Thursday, and returns home to face La Plata on Friday.
