For the first time since 2015, the Marceline girls' basketball team is champion of its own tournament.

With a 45-42 victory against Macon on Saturday evening, the Tigers claimed the title of Marceline Hoops Tournament victor.

Despite losing their first game, 51-48, versus Milan, the Tigers held the tiebreaker on point-differential after beating South Shelby by nine points -- Milan fell to South Shelby by five. In years past, the tournament had been an eight-team, bracketed affair, but this year's six-team format still ensured that each time got three games coming off of the holiday break.

In Saturday's championship, Marceline took a 15-7 lead into the second quarter, and held a 28-21 lead at the half. A 14-7 run by Macon to end the third and begin the fourth tied the game at 35 apiece, but Macon never led after taking a 3-0 lead in the opening seconds of the game.

Baylee Jobson led the way for Marceline with 21 points, and Kenzie Stahl was also in double-figures in scoring with 10. Jaylea Bixenman finished with nine.

Freshman post Ramzee Bruner and senior guard Maycee Edgar were named to the all-tournament team. They combined for just one point in Saturday's championship. The night prior, versus South Shelby, Edgar went off for 24 points and Bruner had 12.

By the time of this publication, Marceline will have played in Harrisburg on Monday night. The Tigers host Schuyler County on Friday.
